The wedding cake is a tradition that is tasty and beautiful but will you be serving it? As with everything weddings, you’ve got options!

Real of Fake Cake?
Traditionally, a wedding cake is all real and served to each guest at the end of the meal. Did you know you have a few options for a fake cake?
Some couples hate the idea of a cake not being ‘real’, but for those that are interested in alternatives that are either more cost efficient or make more sense as it isn’t to everyone’s taste… A cake can be fully fake except for a cutting slice. This is a wedge at the back of the cake and indicated with icing or other so that you cut the right spot.
Serving your Wedding Cake
When the cake is all real, it’s taken to the back after cutting and sliced up and plated. Then servers will bring it out for each guest to enjoy following dinner at their table setting.
Similarly, even if your cutting or display cake isn’t real, you could have a sheet cake in the back to be served for guests to enjoy. Doing it this way can save time since it can be cut and plated in advance. The added benefit is that you could choose a favourite cake type that is harder to make into a tall tiered cake. Wedding cakes are usually tall and therefore need to be a denser cake to hold up with multiple tiers.

Why to not serve your Wedding Cake?
Realistically, not everyone eats it so many slices could go to waste. Either guests are too full, not seated any longer as it’s later in the evening or they don’t like cake. With your catering, they usually have a dessert course so the wedding cake could be a second dessert served and that could be too much for guests to eat two desserts.

Other Wedding Cake Serving Options
One of our preferred ways of serving wedding cake is to have a cutting cake, either full real, one tier real or one cutting slice – it all works! Then having enough cake plated for 40% of the guests. This could be served on a dessert table in addition to other offerings. This way there’s no question that your cake has been served and you can also include a few of your other favourite sweets that can’t be made into a wedding cake shape! Tarts, cupcakes, mousses, cookies, doughnuts, churros, there are so many other desserts that you can add to your table. It’s also a fun way to have a dynamic table and with different options, it looks good too! Having your dessert table set during dancing can be your late night snack. Keeping it close to the dance floor festivities keeps guests happily fed and close!
