Michelle and Hernán came to me the way the majority of my couples do… by referral (incredibly proud of this!!) and they were a dream to work with. If I had to pinpoint words to describe them and their priorities for their wedding, they would be: easy-going, sweet, family-oriented. Probably a lot of other extremely positive words too, but you get the idea.
Planning with M&H was incredibly smooth. I have mentioned in other blog posts about my love for getting to know my couples and the ability to match them with the right vendors that suit them best and this wedding was a prime example of that. When I reflect on each of the vendors we selected, ALL of them were the first options we discussed! That’s definitely a rarity.
Family
I would say the central theme around Michelle and Hernán’s wedding would be family. Everything came back to their family and those friends they consider family. Their consideration of having Family portraits before the ceremony to make sure there was enough time and priority given was a great example of this. It also shows that you don’t need to follow the norm when planning your day.
Family was carried through with the wedding favours being brought in by Hernán’s two sisters who own and operate Melt Confections out of Edmonton. They added a personal and beautiful touch to the place settings with alternating colours to match our palette. As Hernán’s favourite cake is carrot cake, they also added that extra flavour into the wedding for guests to take home with them.
Ceremony
The Ceremony saw Hernán being escorted by both his parents down the aisle and the same went for Michelle. The Ceremony featured live music with the ukulele and vocals from Musos Entertainment’s Scott Perrie. They had a wine box prepared to be sealed and opened on an anniversary of their choosing. The Ceremony ended with the Brix team distributing bubbly for everyone to start the celebrations!
Reception
Everything was held at Brix & Mortar Restaurant in Yaletown. It’s the perfect location with the Courtyard for the Ceremony and the dedicated space for the reception inside. We had about 90 guests and that felt like the ideal number while still having plenty of space for the dance floor.
The evening was full of heartfelt speeches with plenty of tears and laughter.
Decor
For their decor, we kept things simple, but definitely vibrant and modern with the tropical influences and colours in the florals done by Alice of Floralista. From the bouquets to the Ceremony arrangements to the centrepieces, these flowers really stood out and popped set against the brick and lighting of our venue, Brix.
Michelle and Hernán found wedding pictures from their parents, grandparents and relatives and had them framed to include on their sign-in table. We also had a polaroid station set-up for guests to take as they liked and stick them in a guestbook to keep it fun.
The Wedding Cake was a showstopping piece done by A.Elizabeth Cakes. From tasting to sketch to seeing it on the wedding day, it was amazing! The modern black lines echoed our invitations and those sugar flowers – wow! Doesn’t hurt that it tasted great and we included two flavours for guests to indulge. We had the cake positioned near the head table in the dining room for guests to admire as they made the transition from Cocktail Hour to dinner, and then had it moved to the Courtyard under the mirror to further be appreciated. One of my favourite things is to move your decor pieces around to make the most use out of them and this was no exception! We had the cake placed in the middle and moved the family wedding pictures on either side with candles everywhere. Flanked by the two large ceremony arrangements, it was stunning!
First Look and Group Pictures
Michelle and Hernán had so many amazing photo-taking sessions in their wedding day. Our photographer, Sachin Khona found multiple locations that were all amazing! Front the First Look, to Wedding Party pictures, to Group Pictures and then being stolen away for a few evening shots, what an incredible range of portraits they will have to look back at.
As I mentioned at the beginning, Michelle and Hernán came to me as a referral from one of my past couples, Andrea and Chris (see their wedding feature here). They have now been a bridesmaid and groomsman in each other’s weddings with me as their Wedding Planner, how cool is that?
